georgia-born, brooklyn-based sophia saze set up dusk & haze to release ‘genre-free’ experimental music, exhibited in the label’s debut release entitled ’solace’ ep featuring four versatile cuts from sophia herself and twisted electro and techno remixes from umwelt and benjamin damage. the second release comes from the enigmatic sdx, a masked artist who’s fiercely championed left-of-centre dance music for decades. crunchy drums and a thumping bassline kick things off in ‘ms 04’ before los angeles duo 138 provide an outstanding remix incorporating a cacophony of raw breaks. modulated flutters, warped blips and white noise create ‘ms 08’, leading into the organic drums and off-kilter arpeggios of ‘007’ until new york’s sc- 164 reworks ‘007’ delivering a pulsating sub and distorted vocal chops. sdx’s ‘nocturnal’ drops on dusk & haze on 10th september 2018.

im juli 1968 eröffnete das jamaikanische label mit sitz in london, trojan records, das geschäft und innerhalb von monaten nach seiner gründung wurde der aufregende neue reggae-sound einem weltweiten publikum vorgestellt. im laufe der nächsten jahre stand trojan für eine reihe von weltweiten mainstream-charthits durch legendäre künstler wie desmond dekker, ken boothe, john holt, the maytals, bob & marcia und dave & ansel collins. zudem legte trojan den karrieregrundstein für die zukünftigen superstars des reggae bob marley, dennis brown und gregory isaacs.

soundway records present kenya special: selected east african recordings from the 1970s & 80s - a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings from east africa. kenya special is accompanied by detailed liner notes, original artwork and photographs. it follows on from soundways much acclaimed african special series that to date has focused on the highlife and afrobeat output from 1970s nigeria and ghana.

catz n dogz continue to roll out their pets sub label step recordings and follow up a slew of soulheavy dance records from baltra, reno wurzbacher and the analog roland orchestra with a solo ep from fellow polish producer universo. with previous appearances on transatlantyk, the auspicious newcomer slots neatly into the step catalogue in presenting his ‘underworld’ ep: a package of softly glowing lo-fi that fans of baltras recent sophia ep on step will relish. underworld then unfolds at a steady, hypnotic pace as moody, interlocking chords and paired up with a gentle spoken vocal that work together to create a poignant, eyes-down mood. icy strings and a trippy spoken are introduced before kora buta follows up with some warm, swooning sample work. sleeper is next up as distant, meandering thumb pianos and rainy textures colour the tracks fuzzy drums while a glassy, legowelt-esque pad glides overhead.frequenza kicks things off a soft, sizzling pad sent ducking under a rock-hard kick drum.

the electronic based pop group, shari vari, founded by helena ratka and sophia kennedy, is about to release its first ep, life should be a holiday, of 5 pieces produced and recorded by the duo under broke and alcoholic circumstances. each piece deals with the traditional forms of song writing by ignoring them – the rules and structures. combining psychedelic lyrics and chords with dark electronic sounds, the beats are weird and stubborn: a teenage crush on a white cat while drowning in a pool. you’ll never want to go to work again: too many psychos in one streetcar are just too hard to handle on an empty stomach. look forward to plunge into the world of shari vari, so hit the booze and run! 2011 sophomore release from the east london quintet formerly known as dark captain light captain. the band released their debut full-length miracle kicker in 2008 to critical praise across the board. the album spawned a surprise hit stateside with -jealous enemies- and catapulted dark captain all around europe and the uk, where they gleefully shared stages with the likes of sophia, 65daysofstatic, tunng and laetita sadier (stereolab). late last year, the band disembarked the relentless carousel of budget flights, punctual soundchecks and questionable service station snack food to record their follow-up. dead legs & alibis is the shimmering, restless result of these endeavors.
